Research Profile
Dr. Ying-Fan Lin’s research focuses on groundwater hydraulics and aquifer testing. He develops analytical and semi-analytical models to investigate non-instantaneous responses and hydraulic memory in groundwater systems, as well as uncertainty in parameter estimation and engineering decision-making arising from model selection. His work also extends to coupled groundwater and heat transport, thermal response testing, and shallow geothermal energy systems.
Research Areas- Analytical and semi-analytical groundwater hydraulics and aquifer testing
- Lagging theory and hydraulic memory in groundwater systems
- Aquifer parameter estimation, model selection, and uncertainty quantification
- Coupled groundwater–heat transport and shallow geothermal systems
According to the Scopus/SciVal Topic Overview, Ying-Fan Lin is ranked No. 2 among authors by publication output in the topic “Groundwater Resource Management” (Topic T.9485; accessed August 2026).
Future Research Directions- Identification of non-instantaneous groundwater responses and multiple timescales
- Parameter estimation and decision uncertainty in aquifer and thermal response tests
- Design of shallow geothermal and subsurface thermal energy storage systems under groundwater-flow conditions
- Integration of physics-based and data-driven methods for groundwater systems
