What is Civil Engineering?
A Vibrant and Enriching Life in Civil Engineering
Over the years, the Department of Civil Engineering has continued to expand and develop, establishing a strong faculty and comprehensive facilities. To enhance educational effectiveness and better prepare graduates for the demands of the future workforce, the department emphasizes the integration of theory and practice. Students receive rigorous training to develop professional competence and become civil engineering professionals capable of integrating theoretical knowledge with practical applications. They are equipped with diverse skills in engineering planning, assessment, design, contracting, construction, and management.
The university experience begins with our Three-Part Freshman Welcome Program. The carefully organized welcome tea party provides freshmen with their first introduction to university life. After the semester begins, a formal welcome tea party allows senior students in each family group to pass down their experiences and insights about university life. The final part of the program is the freshman welcome camp, where students spend two days and two nights building friendships with the classmates who will share the next four years of their university lives.
In addition to the three-part freshman welcome program, sports are also an important part of life in Civil Engineering. The annual Civil Engineering Sports Tournament brings students together through teamwork, energy, and youthful enthusiasm, giving each class an opportunity to strengthen its sense of unity. At the annual National Civil Engineering Sports Tournament, students from Chung Yuan Christian University have also achieved outstanding results and received numerous awards.
Of course, our students enjoy both active and cultural pursuits. We place considerable emphasis on professional humanities education and the development of an appreciation for the arts and culture. Engineering field trips broaden students' perspectives and introduce them to new knowledge and technologies, while professional lectures further enrich their academic and personal development. Every academic year, the department also holds Civil Engineering Night, where students showcase their talents through theatrical performances, singing, and other artistic presentations. These impressive performances allow students to share their creativity with faculty, staff, and students across the university.
Such a rich learning environment has nurtured many outstanding alumni who have achieved remarkable success in society. Every year, the department organizes Alumni Homecoming and the Outstanding Alumni Selection, inviting alumni to return to campus, reconnect with their former teachers and classmates, and share their experiences with current students.
Department Overview
The Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1955, the same year Chung Yuan Christian University was founded. The Departments of Civil Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering grew alongside the university from its early beginnings and have become among the earliest-established academic departments in the field of civil engineering in Taiwan.
In 1982, the Graduate Institute of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering was established and began admitting master's students, strengthening the department's research and development capabilities. In 1988, it was renamed the Department and Graduate Institute of Civil Engineering, and in 1996, the department began admitting doctoral students.
Over the years, the department has cultivated numerous professionals and scholars for both academia and industry. Our graduates are now working at major engineering organizations, universities, colleges, and research institutions in Taiwan and abroad, contributing significantly to the development of civil engineering and national infrastructure.
